Preparation of mercuric iodide
To a solution of 5.7 g of mercuric chloride in 200 ml of hot water pouring, stirring solution of 7 g of potassium iodide in 40 ml of water. The solution is precipitated orange mercuric iodide. Product was filtered off (ideally on a Buchner funnel) and washed thoroughly with warm water (wash thoroughly that we removed poorly soluble, unreacted mercuric chloride).
dry the product at room temperature. The yield was 8 g
Attention! Mercury compounds are highly toxic!
HgCl2 + 2KI --> HgI2 + 2KCl
Mercuric iodide red, finely crystalline precipitate. Dissolve only slightly better soluble in ethanol, methanol, acetone and carbon tetrachloride in the well. The potassium iodide solution responds to soluble tetrajodortuťnatan.
